referee
A person to whom a cause pending in a court is referred by the court, to take testimony, hear the parties, and report thereon to the court. Person who is appointed by court to exercise certain judicial powers, to take testimony, to hear parties, and report his findings. Department of Motor Vehicles v. Superior Court for Los Angeles County, 271 Cal.App.2d 770, 76 Cal.Rptr. 804, 806.
He is an officer exercising judicial powers, and is an arm of the court for a specific purpose. Segal v. Jackson, 183 Misc. 460, 48 N.Y.S.2d 877, 879.
Similar functions are performed by auditors, assessors, or masters (q.v.).
